The Junko Fukutake Terrace, a winding campus pavilion featuring a sinuous, undulating steel roof and glazed glass walls that act as an open open-concept community space. The Teshima Art Museum, his crowning solo masterpiece created in collaboration with artist Rei Naito, is a breathtaking, shell-like structure made of white concrete that mimics a single, organic droplet of water resting on the island landscape. Dropping all traditional interior pillars, the pillarless pavilion features two massive open-air elliptical skylights that invite wind, rain, changing light, and native birds directly inside. Hiroshi Sambuichi is a visionary Japanese architect acclaimed for his site-specific, earth-centric design philosophy that treats air currents, solar paths, and geothermal forces as primary building materials. Rather than depending on mechanical systems, Sambuichi spends months closely researching local microclimates to craft zero-energy architecture that breathes naturally with its environment.
This module explores his sustainable engineering through two landmark public sites. The zero-energy Inujima Seirensho Art Museum, which breathes life into the brick ruins of an abandoned 100-year-old copper refinery using a subterranean solar trench and a chimney-driven thermal pull to regulate climates entirely without electricity. Naoshima Hall, a grand civic community hub featuring a sweeping plaster roof precisely contoured to harness local wind paths and an innovative ceiling slit that draws cool air upward from surrounding well-water gardens.
