Founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the Tokyo-based studio SANAA is celebrated globally for its ethereal, lightweight, and ultra-minimalist architecture. Winners of the prestigious 2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the duo is famous for erasing the boundaries between inside and outside, using glass and steel to create structures that feel almost weightless and completely democratic.
This module centers on the Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, a low-slung, circular glass pavilion designed without a fixed front or back entry. By eliminating physical hierarchies, SANAA's architecture allows natural light and the surrounding public park to flow through the galleries. Travelers will analyze how their signature use of slim steel pillars, flat white surfaces, and expansive glass panels breaks down the traditional fortress-like museum archetype to foster community interaction.

The son of legendary architect Yoshiro Taniguchi, Yoshio refined a signature style that fuses the crisp, geometric lines of Western mid-century modernism with the profound stillness and spatial awareness of traditional Japanese Zen philosophy.
This module takes you deep into his refined design language at the D.T. Suzuki Museum, where you will study his iconic "Water Mirror Garden" to observe how flat water canvases generate spatial reflection and spiritual silence. The exploration continues at the Yoshiro and Yoshio Taniguchi Museum of Architecture, which honors his family's multi-generational design legacy. Travelers will focus on the framing of negative space (ma) and the seamless connection between pristine interior pathways and external natural elements.

Hiroshi Naito is an influential architect and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, renowned for his philosophy of "tectonic reality." Rather than chasing fleeting design trends, Naito focuses on the honest, muscular expression of materials and engineering. His buildings are deeply respected for their structural resilience, climate responsiveness, and powerful harmony with surrounding natural landscapes.
In this module, you will tour the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design, evaluating how Naito handles structural scale along the Kansui Park waterfront. You will examine the building's expansive wood-paneled interior staircases and its open, public rooftop layout. The curriculum focuses on how his material-driven architecture, utilizing exposed beams, timber, and glass, can remain light, airy, and deeply sensitive to a region's sweeping topography and unique environment.

Kengo Kuma and Associates

Kengo Kuma is one of Japan's most prolific and famous contemporary architects, globally recognized for designing the Tokyo National Stadium for the 2020 Olympics. Kuma advocates for what he calls "weak architecture"—structures that deliberately avoid imposing concrete mass. Instead, he utilizes intricate, repeating screens of natural timber, stone, and bamboo to dissolve buildings into their organic environments.
This module highlights TOYAMA Kirari (Toyama Glass Art Museum), where you will step into a breathtaking, diagonal interior canyon constructed of local cedar planks, glass, and aluminum that dynamically plays with shadows and light.
隈研吾是当今日本最多产且最具国际知名度的建筑大师之一，曾担纲设计了2020年东京奥运会主场馆——国立竞技场。隈研吾强烈反对用庞大、冰冷的混凝土块去支配环境，而是主张“负建筑”。他擅长将木材、石材、竹子等天然材料转化为精密的、重复的格栅与百叶，让建筑在视觉上溶解于有机的自然环境中。
本行程中的富山玻璃美术馆即是他的作品。步入其中，您将置身于一个由当地杉木板、玻璃和铝板交错排列而成的巨大对角线中庭斜谷，体验光影与材质的动态嬉戏。
